Phil Fitz’s album Makes Stand for ex-pros

The Irish Professional Footballers Benevolent Association is proud to chime in to congratulate and thank one of its own – Phil Fitzgerald, a former League of Ireland player whose latest creative venture is striking a powerful chord both musically and charitably.
His debut album, Making My Stand, released on September 1st, is more than a personal milestone – it’s a heartfelt pledge to support former players facing physical and mental health challenges. A percentage of all proceeds from the album will go directly to the IPFBA, helping those who once gave everything to the game in this country.
Phil’s footballing journey began at just 15, when he left Dublin to join Arsenal during a golden era for Irish talent. Training alongside legends like Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton, Phil honed his skills on the pitch while quietly nurturing another passion – music.
“I remember walking past a shop in London and seeing a cheap guitar and a book on chords. That’s how it started.”
After returning to Ireland at 17, Phil played for Dundalk, Shelbourne, and Drogheda United, building a respected career in the League of Ireland before retiring at 28 due to injury. But the rhythm of the game never left him – it simply found a new beat.

Over the years, Phil became a rhythm guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, performing in local bands and organising charity gigs for causes close to his heart.

Now, with Making My Stand, Phil brings together a lifetime of experience, emotion, and artistry. Produced at Mouse Recording Studio in Dublin, the album features ten original tracks, including the debut single All I Can Say, now available for streaming and download via Bandcamp. The album showcases a stellar lineup of musicians, including Mal O’Brien, Graham Carey, Rebecca Cramer Maher, and more – each adding depth and soul to Phil’s vision.

“I’m hugely proud of the work that’s gone into this album,” Phil says. “And I’m equally proud to support the IPFBA, who are doing tremendous work for former players from different eras. Many of my old teammates are struggling with health issues, and this is my way of giving back.”
“If just a small percentage of players and supporters purchase or stream the album, it could make a real difference.”

PFA Ireland General Secretary Stephen McGuinness adds, “Phil’s charitable contribution through his album is a great initiative that will hopefully go a long way in assisting former players when they need it most.”
Making My Stand is available now for €15 or more, with high-quality downloads in MP3, FLAC, and more. To support Phil’s mission and help the IPFBA continue its vital work, visit Bandcamp and make your own stand today.
