Niall Quinn proposes All-Island friendly fundraiser at launch of Three Wise Men event in Vicar Street

Niall Quinn has called for an All-Island friendly to raise funds for ex-League of Ireland players.

The monies raised would support the work of the Irish Professional Footballers Benevolent Association (IPFBA) to help former players facing financial and medical challenges.

Quinn said he was inspired by the 1973 all-island match against Brazil, saying “We should try reenacting that sort of match, with the goal to sell out the Aviva for the benevolent fund.”

The Ireland legend was speaking at the April 11 launch of our “Three Wise Men” event in Vicar Street, Dublin, on Monday, 28 April, when he, Liam Brady and John Giles will take the stage.

Quinn added, “If we forget about the people who kept the game strong when it was under attack…then we’re at nothing.”

Liam Brady voiced similar concerns. He highlighted the struggles of players who juggled football and full-time jobs.

“You are going to suffer when you get to 60,” Brady said. “That’s not just with hips and knees, but the worst possible thing is dementia.”

The issue of dementia among footballers is growing. The late Joe Kinnear, for instance, suffered from its effects. Similar cases are being seen in Ireland.

Harry McCue, IPFBA chairperson, said their funds have grown to €30,000. They aim to reach €50,000 through the Vicar Street event.

“Most of them are hardship, most are in full-time care — and all are ex-players,” Harry explained.

An all-island benefit game could supercharge fundraising and significantly boost the IPFBA’s profile. Niall Quinn believes it is time to honor those who kept Irish football alive.
